As per an instrument of acceptance of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization, as amended, with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on 18 July 2008, the Cook Islands became the latest Member of IMO. This entry has taken the total number of member states of the IMO to 168, along with three additional Associate Members.

The Cook Islands not being a Member State of the United Nations, was required to garner an approval of two-thirds (112) of the current IMO membership in its application to join IMO. The application to join the IMO was submitted in 1999 and the 112th letter of acceptance was received by the IMO Secretariat on 15 July 2008.
